Stop Congress from Silencing Broadcasters!
Act Now! Say NO to House Speaker Pelosi
I want to bring you a late update from Capitol Hill on the efforts to ensure that the Fairness Doctrine is not reinstated. Several important events occurred this week. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi clearly indicated that she opposes any effort that opposes the Fairness Doctrine - including the push to get a House vote on the Broadcaster Freedom Act, which is important legislation that would permanently prohibit a return of the Fairness Doctrine. The problem is Speaker Pelosi and others have kept this important measure bottled up in the House.
As you know, Congressman Mike Pence has been pushing to get enough names on a Discharge Petition that would bring this measure to the House floor for an up-or-down vote. Speaker Pelosi has been quite clear about opposing such a move and, in fact, stated that she would like to see the Fairness Doctrine reinstated.
As you also know, an overwhelming majority of the House voted to approve a one-year moratorium on bringing back the Fairness Doctrine. But that temporary measure is just that—temporary. Without a vote on the Broadcaster Freedom Act, Speaker Pelosi and others will aggressively push to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine.
Here's the bottom line. We need just 22 members of the House to sign on to Congressman Pence's Discharge Petition to get the measure on the House floor for a vote. And we need your help. We've already heard from more than 160,000 Americans and we are grateful. But if you haven't signed the ACLJ petition urging House members to act, please do so by clicking here.
There's another course of action you can take as well. You can contact directly the offices of the 113 House members who voted for the one-year moratorium but have yet to vote for the Discharge Petition. To obtain a list of their names, districts, and telephone numbers, click here.
We cannot afford to let Speaker Pelosi win this battle. Our free speech is at stake. We'll bring you additional updates as developments unfold next week.
